Chilliwack + Landscape

Rosedale Retreat

Chilliwack, British Columbia

Known for their warm hospitality, the homeowners frequently host large gatherings and were looking for a landscape design that could accommodate their lifestyle and preserve their privacy while maintaining the natural beauty of the landscape.

The Vision

Located in a picturesque rural community, our client's expansive property boasts stunning views of the majestic Mt. Cheam. They sought a landscape transformation that protected their privacy while giving them ample space for entertaining — while maintaining the view and open, expansive feel of their rural property.

The Design

Balancing openness with privacy presented a unique challenge. The clients desired a landscape that felt secluded from neighbours and adjacent roads without sacrificing the magnificent view and rural ambiance. We also needed to plan for the integration of a future coach house, manage a steep grade change in the backyard and incorporate existing elements like mature trees, plantings and a pond into the new design.

During construction, the backyard's deceptively steep grade demanded careful terracing and landscaping to ensure usability without drastic changes in elevation. Another major challenge arose with the existing pond — we discovered that the original pond basin couldn't support the new design's viewing platform. This led to the installation of a new pond basin, ensuring the feature remained a focal point without sacrificing safety or aesthetics.

The Transformation

This landscape’s transformation has been nothing short of spectacular. The new design includes private, intimate spaces that respect the property’s rural charm and expansive views. A traditional farmhouse aesthetic near the home transitions smoothly into a more rustic, natural style, reflecting the wild fields beyond.

The redesigned pond — along with the preserved stream and waterfall — became the focal point of the new landscape design. Reducing the size of the lawn and placing drought-tolerant plants throughout the garden reduced maintenance and helped preserve the open, rural feel of the property.

Covered spaces were added to invite outdoor entertainment without feeling enclosed. The architecture of the new pergola was thoughtfully planned to frame, not block, the mountain views.

  • A revitalized pond

Built following the Aquascape method, the pond features a filtration system, EPDM liner, and a blend of rocks and gravel. Plantings in the stream and pond provide natural filtration, keeping the water clear without chemicals. A platform invites guests to enjoy an intimate view of the pond.
  • Low-maintenance lawn & gardens

Maintenance needs were reduced by decreasing the size of the lawn and choosing drought-tolerant plants. We kept a traditional farmhouse feel near the house, transitioning to a more natural planting style to bridge the gap between the formal entertaining area and the wild, untamed field beyond.
  • Permeable flagstones

By employing Romex as the base and jointing material, water can drain through the joints, preventing surface runoff that often occurs with conventional patio materials. The old flagstones were used throughout the space, enhancing the garden's natural beauty.
