Langley + Landscape

Seamless Flow

Langley, British Columbia

A spacious landscape in Langley with multiple entertaining areas to host big groups, including a wading pond and four-hole mini-putt course.

The Vision

This expansive property in Langley is home to a large family. They enjoy their summers and pictured themselves sitting on their patio in awe of their surroundings. A spacious landscape with multiple entertaining areas to host big groups was a must.

With so much land at their disposal and a gorgeous natural setting, these homeowners wanted to ensure the main entertaining spaces of the landscape seamlessly blended into their extended surroundings.

The Design

This design was challenging but extremely rewarding to build once all the pieces fell into place.

With many of their children still at home, the homeowners needed to have space for everyone consistently, not just when having parties. We achieved this with a beautiful water feature that fits the natural surroundings of the area. It also serves as a sound buffer between where all the parents sit during parties (by the fireplace close to the house), and where the kids hang out (at the firepit close to the stream).

Another part of the challenge was designing all of the different features that would be enjoyed regularly and keeping these features close to the house without having it feel crowded. We thought long and hard about the traffic flow and proportions of the property so that we wouldn't create any dead-end destinations. We clearly defined each space for its use, but the family is still free to move from one to the other seamlessly.

Today, the long summer nights in this landscape consists of relaxing together as a family, entertaining friends, lots of card games, unwinding in the wading pond, and sitting around the firepit to take in the incredible sunset and mountain views.

  • Natural Wading Pond

The pond is built to hang out in, with strategically-placed boulders that allow for wading in or sitting down to cool off. Groups can jump in for a quick dip or dangle their feet to cool off.
  • Four-Hole Mini-Putt Course

We hear stories quite often of how this family has found different and creative ways to use the mini-putt course, and who holds the lowest score in the family!
  • A Seamless Flow

There are no dead-ends here. The entire landscape is easy to navigate for large groups, and everything is close to the house.
“In our mind's eye we saw a picture of the oasis we were hoping to make in what was a patch of gravel, weed and splotches of grass. After our initial meeting with Matt and seeing the preliminary drawings from the designer, Trent, our vision came to life. From start to finish, we enjoyed having their professional insight and hardworking employees. The oasis that was made is an extension of our living area and we enjoy every minute of it! We would highly recommend Vandenberg for your project!”
