Asian-Inspired Oasis

Surrey, British Columbia

After a major renovation to their home, this family wanted to upgrade their backyard with low-maintenance options — giving them ample time and space to entertain their grandchildren and relax with family and friends.

The Vision

We first started working with this lovely family over a decade ago. They loved the design we created for their yard, but felt it was time for an upgrade to reflect their current circumstances.

Now that life was slowing down, they wanted a space where they could entertain their large family and spend time exploring the outdoors with their grandchildren — without spending a lot of time on maintenance.

They also wanted plenty of space to showcase their large collection of bonsai — including a fifty-year old spruce that’s only eighteen inches tall!

The Design

The homeowners love for nature and bonsai made this asian-inspired design a perfect fit.

A large covered patio was built off the back of the house to give them a place to gather outside and entertain even when the weather isn’t ideal. It was decided to use natural stone and flagstone to create the patio and walkways — rather than concrete — to make it aesthetically pleasing and relatively low-maintenance.

To add an element of surprise and adventure we built an asian-style gazebo with a special water feature separating it from the main garden area. Water spills out from a massive boulder and flows down a small stream into a pondless basin, creating a calm and tranquil setting — the perfect setting for relaxing in the hot tub! A charming bridge provides easy access and makes it feel like an exotic destination.

Large boulders, stone, pea gravel and river rock provide structure and interest to the gardens, complementing the bonsai, Japanese maples and other garden plantings. The homeowners now have a beautiful zen garden that gives them the space they need to enjoy time with their family and friends.
