How to Protect Your Investment With Landscape Maintenance

The care you put into your lawn, gardens and hardscapes during the spring and summer months will determine the health and beauty of your landscape — nothing looks worse than a flower bed choked with weeds, buckled patio stones and a lawn that’s patchy and brown.

Before these issues crop up, remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure — so the best way to protect your landscape investment is to maintain it with regular upkeep. Here are the six top tips we give to clients who have invested in a new landscape with us.

1. Get yourself some gardening gloves.

Our landscape designs include a variety of native plants that thrive naturally in the Lower Mainland — making it much easier to maintain them.

Get to know your plants (you can look them up on the PlantSnap smartphone app) and how to care for them. Most need little more than regular watering and feeding during the summer months and a nice, thick application of mulch to keep the weeds at bay.

And once your plants mature and fill in the weeds will have a harder time getting sunlight and nutrients, so you’ll have to weed less often. Just be sure to take care of the weeds that do emerge right away — before they have a chance to spread and become a major nuisance.

2. Give your lawn and gardens enough water.

If you want your lawn and gardens to be lush, healthy and the envy of the neighbourhood, you need to include regular watering in your maintenance schedule.

The best time to water is early morning, before the heat of the day. This gives the roots more time to absorb the water and prevent the water from evaporating.

New plantings and fresh sod need to be watered daily until they’re established. After that an inch a week is all they need — overwatering can lead to shallow roots and unhealthy plants.

3. Mow your lawn regularly.

The best time to mow your lawn is early morning (after the dew has dried) or late afternoon, avoiding the heat of the day.

Make sure your blade is sharp and set to cut between 2.5 and 3 inches, depending on the weather and type of grass you have.

The goal is to take no more than 1/3 off the top so you don’t stress out your lawn, so aim to mow at least once a week.

4. Fertilize your lawn.

Your lawn needs to be fertilized every 6–8 weeks to replenish the nutrients in the soil, starting in early spring. So basically you have 4 applications — early spring, late spring, late summer and fall.

Regular fertilization gives you a thick and healthy lawn and discourages weeds by crowding them out.

5. Control weeds naturally with mulch.

Applying a nice, thick layer of mulch over your garden beds not only looks terrific, it makes caring for your garden a lot easier.

Mulching keeps the soil warm, helps your plants retain moisture (so less watering is needed) and is a natural weed deterrent. If a weed somehow does end up poking through the mulch, its roots are shallow and weak, making it easy to pull.

6. Prune your trees and shrubs.

To cut down on the amount of pruning you need to do, it’s best to incorporate mass plantings into your garden design. By planting groups of 5–7 — or even as many as 15 — the plants tend to grow into each other so you’re less likely to notice when the garden becomes overgrown.

But to keep your trees and shrubs healthy and looking their best, you do need to prune your trees and shrubs at least once a year.

Pruning should be done in late fall or early winter when the tree is dormant — pruning in the spring when the sap is flowing will rob your tree or shrub of essential nutrients.

Flowering shrubs should be pruned right after the blossoms fade — if you wait too long, you risk nipping off next year’s blooms!

Common Drainage Issues & How to Fix Them

“When it rains, it pours” applies to a lot of problems in life.

Your landscape is not exempt. One of the most common issues in our clients’ landscapes is a lack of drainage, which means big puddles, bugs, unwanted wildlife, damage to your home and more!

The Lower Mainland receives, on average, 65% more rain than four other major Canadian cities combined. Don’t let that ruin your yard and stop you from enjoying the sunny days because of drainage issues.

Improper grading

Having a proper slope surrounding your house is very important particularly in our mountainous region. If you’re at the bottom of a steep slope or hill, the water could run down toward your home with disastrous consequences.

Improper grading means the slope around your house is ineffective at moving the water away from your home, causing damage to its foundation and leading to cracks and mold. The area surrounding your house should have at least a 5-degree downward slope to direct water away from the foundation.

Geographical features

Some regions are susceptible to poor drainage solely based on physical features like mountains and bogs. In our region, there are two types of issues we see:

Peat soil is essentially part of wetlands. It’s soil with little to no drainage at all. A great solution is to include rocks and gravel to your landscape by replacing sections of your lawn with gravel walkways. Water drains faster through gravel which helps drain the poor soil.

If you have peat or boggy soil, consider creating a beautiful rock garden or gravel paths that use lots of gravel to help drainage.

Rocky landscapes and soil are a common occurrence in landscapes around our region. It can be difficult and costly to dig to build drainage systems with this type of landscape.

At Vandenberg Landscapes, we bring in our own soil mix to ensure that the landscapes we build have proper drainage and good quality soil. This soil is created with 70% sand which helps water run through the soil and properly drain instead of becoming stagnant and saturated.

Excessive rain and flooding

Without proper drainage systems in place your property could quickly flood in heavy rains. This issue is common in hilly areas with groundwater runoff. The water will run down, flooding under the surface and can be hard to detect before damage like fungus and diseased plants occur on your property. Our most common drainage system solutions are:

Catch basins are installed at the lowest point of your property to collect rainwater and runoff. Catch basins are connected to a system of pipes that distribute the water away from your yard to the basin.
French drains, which consist of a trench that’s filled with gravel and has a pipe running through it. The purpose is to reroute the flow of water away from an area towards a basin.
Dry wells are used at the end of your drainage system. Dry wells are holes with gravel that act like a filter while the water is dispersed deep underground.

The first step to fixing any drainage issue is to understand how to control the water. Start by asking yourself if your drainage issue needs to have water rerouted entirely or if you need a design solution that helps soil absorb and drain the water. What Makes a Landscape Low-Maintenance?

Every conversation we have with new clients before we begin planning their new landscape starts with “I want it to be low-maintenance.” Now, this sounds like a reasonable request, but it’s really not that simple.

Some people think having a great expanse of lawn is low-maintenance, while others shudder at the thought of having to mow it every week. That’s why the next question we ask is, “Why do you want a low-maintenance landscape… and what does that mean to you?”

Most people will crack a joke about not wanting to weed, but a truly low-maintenance landscape looks different for everyone. There really is no such thing as a no-maintenance yard… it really comes down to you and the type of maintenance work you can tolerate. As crazy as it sounds, I even know someone who likes to weed!

That being said, there are a few things that will help reduce the amount of time you spend working in your yard so you can spend more time enjoying it!

Our process always starts with “Why”

“Why?” is the most important question we ask our clients and the first step in our process. It’s really the only way we get to know you and what it is you value in life.

So when you’re in the preliminary stages of planning a new landscape, you need to sit down and think seriously about the type of tasks you’re willing to do to maintain your property.

Of course, you could always have someone maintain it for you, which makes this decision much easier!

For those who hate to mow…

If mowing your lawn isn’t your idea of fun, your plan should include plenty of patio space.

Patios are a great way to extend your living areas into the outdoors and give you ample space for entertaining.

When choosing which materials to use for your patio, each type has pros and cons, so go for the one that will give you the most joy.

Stamped concrete, for example, is beautiful, long-lasting and easy to clean… but it needs to be sealed every year or two to keep that gorgeous colour.

For those who really hate to mow…

If mowing really isn’t your thing, you can always have synthetic turf professionally installed. This is important because poorly installed turf is as obvious as a bad toupée and definitely not the look you’re going for.

Artificial turf is especially effective around patios, pools and other areas where mowing might be awkward and difficult.

A planting plan is crucial for low-maintenance landscapes…

We’ve all seen gardens that look overgrown and unkempt, even after just a few years, while other gardens seem to always look great. Is it because the homeowners with messy gardens are lazy?

Of course not! Usually, it’s a situation where the wrong plants were used — they either don’t get big enough to fill the space (which will happily be filled by weeds) or they get too big and take over the entire garden.

Low-maintenance gardens start with a comprehensive planting plan. This determines where each plant should go based on it’s size, form, colour and texture. It should also take into account:

The type and condition of your soil
The amount of sunlight the plants will receive
The plants that are best adapted to the local climate.

You might automatically assume that perennials are easier than annuals because they don’t have to be planted every year, too. But they do need to be pruned and divided regularly to maintain their shape and health.

Manage your expectations

Another factor that determines how much time and effort you need to maintain your landscape is the expectations you have for your yard.

A lawn with a bit of moss and a few stray weeds is far easier to maintain than a fancy golf-green lawn. It all comes down to the law of diminishing returns… is the time, effort and expense you put into maintaining “perfect” lawn and gardens worth it? Does it really need to be pristine?

The current trend is to move away from perfection to create a “green” atmosphere that more closely resembles nature. In fact, it is often the small imperfections that give a landscape its beauty and character.

Is Your Grass Dead… or Dormant?

In November of 2021, entire regions of the Fraser Valley were swamped by floodwater, with Abbotsford being particularly hard hit. This past year the summer drought continued into the fall, depriving our crops — and our lawns – of the rainfall needed to recover.

Cool-season grasses, like the type we grow in the lower mainland, typically go dormant during the heat of the summer and recover when it gets cooler and rainier in the fall. But not this fall.

Let’s take a look at what dormancy actually is and how to tell if your brown grass is dead or dormant.

What is dormancy?

Dormancy is part of a plant’s normal life cycle. Going dormant helps the grass conserve moisture, protecting it from seasonal damage and stress caused by extreme temperatures.

The type of grass you have and the climate you live in affects when — and if — your grass goes dormant. Most of the turf growing in the lower mainland is a mixture of three types of cool-season grasses — rye grass, blue grass and fescue.

These grasses prefer moderate temperatures and tend to go dormant when temperatures dip below 12° C or during hot, dry summers — which is why your grass tends to turn brown in August.

This is not normally an issue because the dormancy phase is typically followed by more favourable conditions — cooler temperatures and more rain. As stated in the intro, this didn’t happen for us this year, and the dormant grass became frozen… and it’s difficult to say how it will affect your lawn.

How to tell if grass is dead or dormant

You may not be able to tell if your grass is dead or merely dormant just by looking at it, although dormant grass will start to green up in the spring when conditions improve while dead grass will stay brown.

The best thing to do is go outside, grab a handful of grass and pull on it lightly. Dead grass will pull out easily, while dormant grass will offer some resistance. While you’re there, look at your grass closely. The crown (which is just above the roots) should be pale with tinges of green indicating that there is still life in your grass. If it’s all brown, you’ll need to reseed the area or lay down sod — or you might even want to consider synthetic grass!

The best way to protect your grass

Grass is incredibly resilient and will withstand a lot of environmental stresses, including drought. But there are a few “best practices” to follow that will help keep it healthy and strong.

Choose the right type of grass for the climate — The grass seed we typically use to seed a new lawn is a mixture of rye grass, blue grass and fescue. We get most of our sod from Western Turf farms, who use a similar blend.
Prepare your lawn for the growing season — Each spring we recommend aerating and dethatching your lawn. This helps rain and nutrients reach the plant’s roots.
Overseed your lawn — Adding new seed to an established lawn helps refresh it and fill in any bare spots, creating a thick, lush turf that deters weed growth.
Fertilize regularly — Fertilizer supplies your lawn with the nutrients it needs for health and growth, namely nitrogen, phosphate and potash. The amount you need of each varies, so it’s best to conduct a soil test so you get the right combination for your lawn.
Follow a regular watering schedule — your lawn should be watered deeply once a week, making sure it gets at least 2.5cm. The best time to water is early morning (before 10 am) or late afternoon (between 4 and 6 pm). Make sure not to over water your lawn though. Over-watering encourages shallow root growth and leaves your lawn susceptible to pests and disease. It may be best to install an irrigation system to take the guesswork out of it.
Mow your lawn correctly — Set your mower’s blade to the right height and make sure it’s sharp! Dull blades damage grass. Remember to vary your mowing pattern so your grass grows nice and straight.

So, check your grass this spring. If you find it starting to green up you can breathe a sigh of relief and carry on with your regular maintenance schedule.

But if your worst fears have come true and your grass is dead, don’t despair. Although removing the dead turf and replacing it is labourious, time consuming work it can be done and you’ll still be able to enjoy your lawn this summer. The Truth About Pond Maintenance

A pond is a unique feature that adds character and personality to your backyard, setting it apart from others in the neighborhood — but many people are hesitant when it comes to actually owning one. Why?

I believe it comes down to the common misconception that ponds are difficult to care for and you’ll spend your entire summer battling mosquitoes and algae. Nothing could be further from the truth, and I’m here to set the record straight.

You’ll struggle with dirty pond water

Nothing in life is maintenance-free, and ponds do require some upkeep… but not as much as people may think. A pond that is professionally designed includes elements that help filter the water naturally, creating a built-in ecosystem. Here are a few tips to keep pond water clean, clear and healthy with minimal effort.

Keep the oxygen flowing — The water at the top of your pond has more oxygen than the water at the bottom, so it needs to be aerated to keep the oxygen levels consistent throughout. Without aeration, algae and pollution can build up, causing your water to turn murky and develop a brackish smell over time.
A combination of surface aeration — which includes features such as fountains, waterfalls, bubbling rocks and basalt columns — and bottom-diffused aeration work together to circulate and oxygenate the water.
Include oxygenating plants — Although they’re quite beautiful and are a stunning addition to any backyard pond, aquatic plants are important for your pond’s health too. They provide oxygen through photosynthesis and absorb nutrients, which limits the growth of algae.
Add ultraviolet lights — Ultraviolet (UV) lights reduce harmful bacteria and destroy single-cell algae that form on the surface of your pond. UV clarifiers can be added to existing filtration systems for additional support, or be integrated into the filtration products themselves.
Ultraviolet lights are not something we typically use at Vandenberg — we haven’t really needed them yet — but they are an option if your pond suffers from excessive algae blooms.
Treat your water — Treat your pond with a bacterial product on a regular basis to keep it clear. Using an autodoser makes this a relatively simple and hands-free process.
Use a filtration system — There are three types of pond filtration — mechanical, biological and chemical. You can use one system exclusively or combine two or three of them together.
- Mechanical filtration systems physically collect and remove debris from the pond.
- Biological systems use natural bacteria to break down pond waste, converting them into beneficial compounds.
- Chemical filtration systems use activated carbon to neutralize pollutants such as tannin, odors, and chlorine.

Your pond will be a magnet for mosquitoes

Mosquitoes prefer to breed in still waters, so if you’ve followed the advice above and have installed some form of surface aeration, you shouldn’t have any more than your pondless neighbours.

Even if your pond does attract a few mosquitoes, it’s not a cause for concern — it also attracts birds, frogs, toads, dragonflies and other wildlife that like to feast on them!

Your pond will be green with algae

Algae is a natural part of a healthy pond, providing nutrients, oxygen, and nourishment for the pond and the insects, snails, fish and other organisms that call it home.

Algae only becomes a problem when it becomes excessive — so don’t ignore it. You can easily keep it in check by adding aquatic plants and a filtration system to your pond.

You have to drain and clean your pond every year

While it’s true that a pond can benefit from occasional cleaning, draining it completely every year can disrupt the ecosystem and harm the fish and plants living in it. Instead, focus on regular maintenance tasks like removing debris, trimming plants, and checking the water chemistry.

Your fish will be in constant danger

Given the chance, there are a lot of predators that would love nothing more than to swoop down to your pond and grab a nice, tasty fish for dinner — but there are some simple things you can do to protect them.

When you’re not outside enjoying your pond, you can cover it with netting or fishing line. If you don’t mind the look of it, you can keep it in place from the time your fish “wake up” in the spring until they go dormant in the winter.
Provide a fish cave, water lilies and some other aquatic plants to give your fish a place to hide.
Installing motion detectors that emit a sound or spray water when it senses an intruder is nearby keeps your fish — and any small humans that wander close to the pond — safe.

Maintaining a pond is hard work

It can be a lot of hard work… but it doesn’t have to be if you follow a regular maintenance schedule and avoid making these common mistakes.

Neglecting to test the water — Pond water needs to be tested regularly so you can check for imbalances in pH levels, nutrient levels, and oxygen levels. Water that isn’t balanced can harm the fish and plants living in the pond.
Allowing debris to build up — Debris such as leaves, twigs, and dead plants can accumulate at the bottom of the pond, leading to poor water quality and an increase in algae growth.
Not fixing leaks — Ignoring leaks can lead to a decrease in water levels and harm the fish and plants living in the pond. It’s essential to fix leaks as soon as they’re discovered to maintain a healthy pond ecosystem.
Too many fish in the pond — Overstocking the pond with too many fish can lead to poor water quality, a decrease in oxygen levels, and an increase in algae growth. It’s essential to maintain a balance between the number of fish in the pond and the size of the pond — and make sure to allow room for fish to grow!
Overfeeding the fish — Feeding the fish is one of the joys of owning a pond… but don’t overfeed them. The uneaten food, plus the extra waste produced by the overstuffed fish, raises nitrogen levels and encourages algae growth.
Choosing the wrong plants — Some aquatic plants are invasive and can take over the pond, leading to a decrease in oxygen levels and an increase in algae growth. You need a good mix of floaters, oxygenators and marginal plants to keep your pond healthy.

There are tools and products available that can simplify pond maintenance. For example, automatic fish feeders can help to regulate the amount of food your fish receive, while pond vacuums can make cleaning the pond easier and more efficient.

By taking the time to properly plan and maintain your pond, you can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful and tranquil outdoor space without the stress and hassle of difficult maintenance.

How to Design and Care for a Rain Garden

The best way to describe the weather in British Columbia lately is unpredictable — with near-record amounts of rain one year, and severe drought the next. And oddly enough, both situations are made worse by the same problem… large expanses of land whose ability to soak up rainwater has been compromised.

Landscapes that rely heavily on asphalt, concrete and other impervious surfaces, including lawns, have a serious impact on their ability to soak up rainwater. This creates two problems — flooding and erosion due to excessive runoff and land that’s unable to absorb enough water and nutrients to sustain plant growth, particularly during a drought.

Fortunately, there are ways to lessen this impact in a way that is both sustainable and beautiful… by designing and installing a rain garden.

What is a rain garden?

A rain garden is a landscape feature designed to collect rainwater that runs off your roof, lawn and driveway and other non-porous surfaces. They’re built by creating a shallow depression and filling it with a special soil mix designed for optimal drainage and water filtration, then planted with grasses and flowering perennials that tolerate drought, but are not afraid to get their feet wet!

What are the benefits of a rain garden?

As stated above, the primary benefit of a rain garden is to prevent flooding associated with groundwater runoff, but they also have a number of other benefits too.

Manage stormwater — Rain gardens reduce the impact excess water has on local waterways, reducing the chance they’ll overflow and create mass flooding.
Cost-effective — Rain gardens are a natural way to manage stormwater runoff and are inexpensive when compared to traditional methods such as storm drains.
Reduce pollutants — The plants and soil used in creating a rain garden act as a filter, reducing the number of pollutants entering the water system.
Supports biodiversity — By creating a habitat for native plants and providing food and shelter for butterflies, songbirds and other wildlife, rain gardens support biodiversity and are eco-friendly.
Low maintenance — Because they help retain water and contain hardy plants, rain gardens are low maintenance.

How to design a rain garden

Properly designed rain gardens help reduce flooding by holding on to excess rainwater, slowly releasing it over time. They complement any style of landscape and can be built to any size, based on available space, your property’s needs and personal preferences. Here are a few tips for designing yours.

Choose the right location — Your rain garden should be at least ten feet away from your home to avoid water damage. Make sure it’s not near a septic system or well and is properly graded — at bare minimum 1% — so the water flows away from your home.
Determine its size — Make sure you have enough space for your rain garden and that it’s large enough to handle the amount of water you expect. This can be determined by the size of your roof and driveway as well as the average amount of rainfall for your area.
Prepare the soil — The soil in your rain garden needs to be well-draining and able to support the types of plants you choose. The optimal soil composition for a rain garden is a mixture of sand, compost, and loam. It’s also important to ensure the soil is well-aerated, with plenty of space between the soil particles for water to move through. This can be achieved by tilling the soil before planting, or by adding organic matter such as leaf litter or wood chips to the top layer of soil.
Choose the right plants — Choose native plants, including wildflowers, perennials, and ornamental grasses, that are adapted to the local climate and can tolerate both wet and dry conditions. Also, consider bloom time when selecting perennials to ensure your garden is full of beautiful colour throughout the year.
Create your rain garden — Start with a man-made depression designed to collect rain runoff, then fill it with gravel or small rocks, soil mix, rain garden plants and mulch.

How to care for a rain garden

Caring for a rain garden is similar to caring for any garden, except the emphasis is on maintaining proper water flow and drainage in addition to plant health. Here are some tips to keep your rain garden healthy and functioning properly.

Mulch your garden — Adding a layer of organic mulch to your garden helps it retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and provides the nutrients needed for plant growth.
Remove weeds — Just like any garden, it’s important to remove weeds from your rain garden to keep it looking tidy and prevent invasive species from taking over.
Monitor water levels — Make sure your rain garden is draining properly and there is no standing water. If there is a drainage issue, check the soil composition and slope of the garden and adjust if necessary. If this is an ongoing problem, you may need to consider installing an underdrain to help with drainage.
Get your soil tested — A soil test determines the pH and nutrient levels of your soil, helping you identify any deficiencies. Adding compost on a regular basis can provide nutrients for the plants and improve soil quality, reducing the need for chemical solutions.
Inspect for damage — Regularly inspect the rain garden for damage, such as erosion or damage to the berm, to help prevent further damage. Make the necessary repairs or alterations to keep it functioning properly.
